Identify theft can happen people in the media, sports figures, actors and actresses..

Of course, most cases of identity theft don’t result in millions of dollars of money taken. They don’t even always involve many people. Most cases of identity theft involve just one person whose identity is stolen, and no one is more susceptible to this than famous people – particularly professional athletes.

For professional athletes, identity theft is especially problematic because their birth dates, salaries, and full names are reported publicly, making it very easy for a criminal to steal their identity.

One example of identity theft occurring to professional athletes was a case involving Tiger Woods. Tiger’s identity thief charged over $50,000 in credit card purchases to Tiger’s legal name. He used a counterfeit social security card with Tiger’s number, but an incorrect middle name, to get credit at Circuit City. Here, he bout a dishwasher and a DVD player.

Ty Law, who is a football player, was also victimized. Jonathan Hoskins got an Ohio driver’s license in Ty’s name and made two $10,000 withdrawals from Ty’s bank account. Similarly, Danny Wuerffi, quarterback for the Washington Redskins, had a store account opened in his name without his knowledge. Steve Smith, San Antonio Spurs guard, had up to $81,000 ran up in his name in credit card charges.

Identity theft is an increasingly common crime that affects people across the nation. In order to prevent identity theft, it is important to always guard your personal information and to keep tabs of your personal credit history. If you suspect you may be the victim of identity theft, contact authorities immediately. You just may be a part of a much bigger problem.
