Today’s identity thieves, have found
subtler ways of gaining your information.
It used to be that being responsible with your credit
card meant that you simply didn’t overspend and that you paid your bills
on time. With the growing numbers of con artists and identity thieves,
however, being responsible with your credit card has taken on an
entirely new meaning.
The oldest and most overt form of identity theft through credit cards is
to simply steal someone else’s wallet in order to gain personal
information. Today’s identity thieves, however, have found subtler ways
of gaining this information.
For example, some identity thieves are stealing mail from people’s
mailboxes. Personal mail can often include a great deal of personal
information that can be used to open new credit card accounts. Credit
cards themselves come to you in the mail. Therefore, some identity
thieves intercept these cards before they get to you.
Sometimes, an identity thief will take a credit card bill, as well. Keep
track of when your monthly bill arrives. If it comes late, contact your
credit card company immediately.
The identity thieves who are most committed to the craft, however, will
create entirely new accounts under your name. In addition to getting
this information from your mail, some identity thieves simply use the
power of observation. We use our credit cards everywhere these days -
even at fast food restaurants.
All an identity thief needs to do is pay close attention to you and he
might get the information he is looking for. When you punch in your PIN
number, always be aware that someone might be watching.
